Apple Updates Yosemite 10.10.1, iOS 8.1.1, and Apple TV

Apple released Yosemite 10.10.1 and iOS 8.1.1 as early stability updates after the initial launches. These were not flashy feature releases. They were the practical kind of updates that mostly exist to make the day-to-day experience feel less rough.

For Yosemite, the update was available through Software Update in the Mac App Store. For iPhone and iPad, iOS 8.1.1 arrived as an over-the-air update. Apple also pushed an Apple TV software update around the same time.

The release notes were mostly about stability and performance. That may sound boring, but it matters. Early major OS releases often shake loose Wi-Fi issues, app compatibility problems, battery complaints, and small interface bugs that only show up once millions of people are using the software.

My usual advice with updates like this still applies: install them on personal devices once you have a backup, but be more cautious on production machines. If the Mac or iPhone is part of your work setup, give the update a little time and make sure nothing you depend on is broken for other users first.
