When the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max showed up, the big questions were not just about the spec sheet. I wanted to know how they felt in the hand, whether the new titanium design really made a difference, how the colors looked in person, and whether the setup process had any surprises.
This was also my first chance to try the phones with MagBak cases, since I have been using stronger MagSafe-style cases in the car to keep the phone from sliding off a mount, especially in my Tesla.
Quick Answer
The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max do feel different from the iPhone 14 Pro Max, but not in a cheap or hollow way. The titanium edges make the phone feel lighter around the outside while still feeling solid in the hand. On my scale, the iPhone 15 Pro Max came in at 6.6 ounces compared with 7.2 ounces for my iPhone 14 Pro Max.
The biggest setup tip is simple: update the new iPhone before transferring your data. There was a known setup bug at launch that could cause problems during phone-to-phone transfer, so I chose the update option before moving anything over. Also, the USB-C cable in the box is mainly a charging cable, not the high-speed cable you need for the fastest wired data transfers.
The Box Has A New Security Mark
One small detail I checked right away was the new security marking on the iPhone box. Under a UV light, there was an Apple-style stamp and a small code area on the back of the box.
It is not something most people will need every day, but it is a useful anti-counterfeit detail if you are buying a sealed iPhone from somewhere other than Apple or a carrier. With the regular lights on, you would probably never notice it.
The White iPhone Is Not Bright White
The iPhone 15 Pro in white was the first one I opened, and the color was not as bright as I expected. In person, it looked more like a soft white-gray or a light satin gray than a clean white.
That is not necessarily bad, but if you are expecting a very bright white phone, this is worth knowing. The back is glass, not titanium, but Apple seems to be matching the overall tone to the titanium frame instead of going for a pure white look.
The rounded edges were noticeable right away. Compared with the sharper-feeling edges on recent Pro iPhones, the iPhone 15 Pro feels smoother around the frame. I could still feel the edge where the glass meets the frame, but the phone itself felt more comfortable in the hand.
Natural Titanium Looks Good, But It Is Not One Perfect Finish
The iPhone 15 Pro Max in natural titanium was the one I chose for myself. The color looks more silver in person, with a brushed look on the side frame and a frosted glass back.
The side and back do not match perfectly. The titanium frame has a warmer brushed look, while the glass back has a different tone and texture. That makes sense because they are different materials, but it is worth pointing out because Apple talks about titanium so much that you might expect the whole phone to look like one solid titanium object.
Next to my Apple Watch Ultra, the side frame of the iPhone 15 Pro Max was actually a pretty close color match. The brushed lines looked more visible on the phone than on the watch, but the overall titanium tone was similar.
It Feels Lighter, But Also More Solid
The first impression was strange in a good way. The iPhone 15 Pro Max felt lighter than my iPhone 14 Pro Max, but it did not feel flimsy. It almost felt like some of the weight moved away from the outside edges and more toward the center of the phone.
That may be why the new phone can feel lighter and more solid at the same time. On the scale, my iPhone 14 Pro Max measured 7.2 ounces, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max measured 6.6 ounces.
Is that a massive difference? Not really. But in the hand, especially with the softer edges, it does change the way the phone feels.
The Included USB-C Cable Is For Charging
The iPhone 15 lineup finally moved to USB-C, but the cable in the box is not the cable you want if your goal is the fastest wired transfer speeds.
The included USB-C to USB-C cable is mainly a charging cable. It will not give you the high-speed transfer performance the Pro models are capable of. If you want faster wired transfers, especially for big video files, you will need a higher-speed USB-C cable.
That is a little frustrating because the Pro phones are being pushed harder as creator and camera tools, but the cable in the box does not fully support that workflow.
Update Before Transferring Your Old iPhone
During setup, I chose to update the new phone before transferring my data. At launch, there was a reported issue where transferring directly without updating could cause the phone to get stuck in a loop.
The setup flow gave me the update option, and I did not skip it. After the update finished, I went back through Quick Start, scanned the setup animation, signed in, set up Face ID, and continued with phone-to-phone transfer.
My preference is still direct phone-to-phone transfer when moving to a new iPhone. When I restore from iCloud, I usually end up signing back into more apps and services. With phone-to-phone transfer, most passwords and app states tend to come over more smoothly, though there can always be a few exceptions.
- Plug both iPhones into power before starting.
- Use Quick Start with the old iPhone nearby.
- Install the available software update before transferring.
- Choose phone-to-phone transfer if you want the closest copy of your old setup.
- Expect the transfer time to depend heavily on how much data is on the old phone.
Transfer Time Depends On Your Data
My wife’s phone finished much faster than mine. Her transfer eventually showed about 15 minutes left, while my iPhone 14 Pro Max transfer was still estimating multiple hours.
That was not too surprising because my old phone was a 1TB model with a lot of apps and data on it. Even though I was not using the full terabyte, there was still a lot to move.
The main thing is to give the transfer time and keep both phones on power. The estimates can jump around, especially early in the process.
MagBak Cases And Car Mounts
I usually like using my phone without a case, but I have been using MagBak cases because the magnet strength works better with my car mount. In my Tesla, weaker magnetic setups have slipped when the road gets bumpy.
The MagBak case I had on my iPhone 14 Pro Max worked well with my mount. It had a stronger hold than several other cases I tried, and it made it easy to grab the phone and go.
For the iPhone 15 Pro Max, I tried the gray MagBak case with the natural titanium phone. The color was close, but not an exact match. The case looked fine, but if you are expecting the gray case to blend perfectly with natural titanium, it does not.
I also checked the phone without a case to see if the glass back made the magnet feel stronger. It did not. If anything, it felt a little less secure, possibly because the glass is more slippery.
The Clear Case Had A Color Surprise
For my wife’s white iPhone 15 Pro, we had a clear MagBak case. The case itself showed the MagSafe-style magnet ring, which is expected, but the white ring looked like it had a blue tint.
That was disappointing because the product image made it look much more white. Combined with the iPhone itself being more of a white-gray than a bright white, the case did not look exactly how I expected.
I reached out to MagBak to ask whether that was normal or a manufacturing issue. Depending on the answer, that case might need to be swapped for a different color.
Early Impressions
After handling both phones, the iPhone 15 Pro line feels like a more refined version of the recent Pro design. The smaller bezels are most noticeable around the corners, the curved edges are more comfortable, and the less shiny frame should hide fingerprints better than the polished stainless steel sides on the older Pro models.
The Action Button looked smaller in person than I expected, but it was easy enough to feel. The camera area looked familiar compared with the iPhone 14 Pro Max, with the titanium-colored housing around the lenses on the new phone.
I still need more time with the camera and daily use before making a full judgment. But from this first look, the natural titanium color is nice, the lighter feel is real, and the setup process is smooth as long as you update first.
Key Takeaways
- Update the iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max before transferring from your old iPhone to avoid launch setup issues.
- The included USB-C cable is mainly for charging and does not provide the fastest Pro-level data transfer speeds.
- Natural titanium looks good, but the frame and glass back do not perfectly match because they are different materials.
- The white iPhone 15 Pro is more of a soft white-gray than a bright white.
- The iPhone 15 Pro Max weighed 6.6 ounces on my scale, compared with 7.2 ounces for my iPhone 14 Pro Max.
- MagBak cases still look useful if you need a stronger magnetic hold for car mounting, but color matching may vary.
