Never Pay for AppleCare again - TotalTech by Bestbuy

If your house is anything like mine, device warranties start stacking up fast. Once you add iPhones, iPads, computers, TVs, audio gear, appliances, and all the other electronics we use every day, the protection plans can become a separate budget line.

That is what made me take a closer look at Best Buy Totaltech. The question was simple: could one yearly membership replace buying AppleCare+ over and over again?

Quick Answer

For my household, Best Buy Totaltech made a lot of sense because eligible Apple devices purchased through Best Buy automatically received AppleCare+. At $199 per year at the time of the video, that was far less than buying separate AppleCare+ plans for every iPhone, iPad, and Mac in the house.

The important detail is that the AppleCare+ coverage was real AppleCare+. The warranty documents came directly from Apple, and the devices were not limited to Best Buy service. They could still be taken to Apple for support like any other AppleCare+ device.

Why I Looked At Totaltech

In my household, everyone has an iPhone, an iPad, and a computer of some kind. That alone gets us to around 12 devices before even counting TVs, sound systems, kitchen appliances, or other electronics.

AppleCare+ usually starts around a couple hundred dollars per device and covers you for two to three years depending on the product. When I looked at the math across the whole house, I was looking at a minimum of about $2,400 every two years just for AppleCare+.

That is before adding protection plans for things like a Sony OLED TV, a sound system, a refrigerator, or a microwave. At some point, it stops feeling like protection and starts feeling like a subscription pile.

How The AppleCare Part Worked

Best Buy Totaltech was $199 per year at the time I joined. The part that caught my attention was that eligible devices purchased through Best Buy received protection benefits, and for Apple products that meant AppleCare+.

I was skeptical at first because I wanted to know whether this was actually AppleCare+ or some kind of Best Buy-only protection plan. After buying through Best Buy, the AppleCare+ documents showed up in my email the next day directly from Apple.

That mattered because it meant the coverage worked the way I expected AppleCare+ to work. I was not locked into only servicing the device at Best Buy. As with other AppleCare+ devices, I could take the product directly to Apple.

The Math

The value depends heavily on how many devices you buy and where you buy them. If you only buy one Apple device every few years, this may not be worth it.

But in a house with a lot of Apple hardware, the numbers change quickly. In my case, separate AppleCare+ plans could run around $2,400 every two years. A $199 yearly membership would be about $398 over two years.

That is the reason Totaltech stood out. Instead of the warranty cost rising every time another device entered the house, the membership created one predictable yearly cost.

  • Separate AppleCare+ plans can add up quickly across a family.
  • Totaltech made the most sense when buying multiple eligible devices through Best Buy.
  • The more eligible electronics you buy, the easier it is to justify the membership.

Other Benefits

The warranty angle was the biggest reason I cared, but Totaltech also included other perks that helped round out the value.

At the time, those included free two-day shipping, free local delivery and haul away, 60-day returns with no restocking fees, Geek Squad tech support, and priority access to phone and online support.

Those extras may or may not matter to you. For me, the warranty savings were the main point. The rest was useful, but not the reason I signed up.

The Caveat

This only works if the devices you want covered are purchased through Best Buy and qualify under the membership terms. You should also check the current Best Buy membership details before making a buying decision, because program names, pricing, included benefits, and warranty rules can change over time.

I would not treat this as a universal replacement for AppleCare+ in every situation. I would treat it as a math problem. If you already buy a lot of Apple devices and electronics through Best Buy, it can be an easy win. If you do not, separate AppleCare+ may still make more sense.
